The Phenom Distortion is a dynamic distortion pedal which uses JFET based clipping instead of Op-amp and Diode based clipping and is loosely based on the legendary “5150” style tones.  The fets are driven much in the same way that tubes can be cranked to overdrive an Amplifier into a distorted sound courtesy of a unique Brian Wampler circuit design.  The Phenom offers a range of tones from a deep, punchy rhythm sound to an ultra-responsive lead tone perfect for soaring solos and crisp harmonics. It has a flexible voicing switch that selects either bright or classic modes, independent gain and volume controls, and a powerful 3-band EQ.

I’ve had the Phenom about a month and I’m still figuring out all it can do. Right now it’s at the end of my drive chain, running at about 9 o’clock. On its own, almost a bluesbreaker tone. Stacking into it I can get any brown Eddie tone and more. With the gain low, driving into it is the same as raising the knob. The Phenom’s tone is more apparent the harder you drive it when used this way. I come out of it into a Klon type pedal for extra headroom, or a compressor. Love my Wampler pedals and I want more!

Glad you are enjoying the pedal 🙂

  2. Thomas Lhamon

Brian does a great job of making all of the controls audible. Most pedal makers add switches that change the “feel” of the pedal which to me is like day and later that day. This pedal is no exception. All controls are usable for the entire range and the bright switch is very noticeable. I’ve had trouble getting the sound I keep hearing in my head, but the Phenom nailed it. I have it in front of a plexi-type preamp and it sounds incredible. It gave me the gain I wanted without sounding muddy and amazingly the noise and hiss was still minimal. Thanks Brian for getting in my head and finding that tone for me.
